Alan Martinez’s Stunning Free Kick Headlines Nona FC’s Five-Goal Rout of Brevard SC

Updated: Jul 10

MELBOURNE, Fla.  Alan Martinez’s double set the tone for the night as the Longhorns rolled past Brevard SC, 5-0 on Tuesday at Catherine Ford Field.

“It was a great performance all around from the team tonight. Everyone played their part and lifted each other up, and the scoreline really shows that.”

Despite not playing a competitive match in two weeks, the Black and Orange showed no signs of rust, tallying a single-match season-high five goals while notching their second clean sheet of the season.

The Longhorns scored five goals in a match and had four or more different goal scorers for the first time since July 9, 2024, when they beat Brevard SC 5-2 on the same field.

Nona (6-4-0, Southeast Division) hit the ground running in the second minute when Christian Kraus, in his first appearance for the Longhorns since May 25 due to injury, crossed the ball in low towards the center of the penalty area. Alan Martinez was quickest to react, firing home his first-ever goal for the Black and Orange. The strike ties the earliest goal in a USL League 2 match for Nona FC, matching Sergio Barbosa’s effort against Brevard SC on July 11, 2023 at the same venue.

“We definitely got a lot of confidence after the first one went in, and never really looked back after that,” Martinez said. “It felt great to score my first goal in a Nona shirt, and the guys made sure it wasn’t the last goal we would score.”

The visitors continued to pile on the pressure, as Kraus’s one-on-one chance with Brevard SC (2-9-1, Southeast Division) goalkeeper Chandler Draper was saved midway through the first half.

In the 40th minute, the Longhorns doubled their lead after a clever back-heel assist from Kraus set up Andre Navas for Nona’s second goal of the night, and his second of the season. With the finish, Navas became the first Nona FC academy product to score multiple goals for the USL League 2 team. Kraus’s assist also made history, marking the first two-assist performance by a Nona player since Ivan Agyaakwah accomplished the feat in a 5–2 win over Brevard SC on May 29, 2024.

The third goal of the night was truly special, coming after Paulo Alves was fouled outside the penalty area in the 66th minute. Martinez stepped up and delivered a spectacular free kick that Draper could only watch as it curled into the top corner of the net. It was the Longhorns’ first free kick goal since Bernardo Monteiro’s season opener against Brevard SC on May 21.

Just 10 minutes later, substitute Christian Acevedo scored his first goal in eight appearances for Nona, slotting away a low cross from fellow substitute and debutant Mouhamed Pouye to add a fourth goal for the Longhorns. It marked the first time two substitutes combined for a goal since June 24, 2024, when Paulo Alves netted from Simon Afrifa-Kodua’s pass in a 2-1 win over Inter Gainesville KF on June 25, 2024.

In the 82nd minute, Nona FC Academy product and substitute Pedro Nunes added the fifth and final goal of the night after finding the bottom left corner of the net from Henrique Cruz’s pass. Nunes’ goal was the second of his Nona FC career, and he became the only academy graduate to score for the club in two different seasons, following his penalty goal on July 11, 2023 against Brevard SC. Nunes also set a club record for the fastest goal by a substitute, scoring just two minutes after entering the match.

The Longhorns held the Fire to zero shots on target and no shots overall, dominating with 26 total attempts and 16 on target.

Goalkeeper Parker Christiansen earned his second clean sheet in two starts this season, with his first coming in Nona’s 3-0 victory over Brooke House FC on May 21, 2025.

The Longhorns remain in second place in the Southeastern Division standings.

Nona FC will play its last game on the road this season at Inter Gainesville KF, on July 11 at 7 p.m. at the University of Florida’s Southwest Recreation center.
